Xiaomi Mi Max 2 review
The latest entrant this year from Xiaomi is Mi Max 2. Its Fourth smartphone launched this year in India after the Redmi note 4, Redmi 4A and Redmi 4. Mi Max 2 is the successor of Mi Max which was released last year. And this time also they are baking on the large display and huge battery.
Xiaomi has mainly targeted on the middle class of India and have succeeded exceedingly in recent years thanks to the popularity of the low-cost Redmi series. Even though Xiaomi has not managed to create any stir in high end flagship device sector, always trailing to the likes of Samsung and IPhone; they have managed to establish themselves in Indian market.
Mi max 2 falls in the category of phones with screens larger than 6 inches. Apart from large display and big battery, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 offers impressive specifications for this price range. So without wasting any time let’s start evaluating this device.

If you are a tech savvy you must be aware of “Marques Brownlee” the YouTube sensation whose Tech videos also include Mobile Phone reviews. He has mentioned several times in his reviews that there are 5 pillars to the great smartphone. Build Quality, Display, Camera. Battery and Performance. It’s sad that majority of the phones reviewed by him are flagship devices which are not used by majority of the population. So, I’m going to review this device through the eyes of MKBHD and his 5 pillars of the great smartphone.
Xiaomi has made some significant changes in the design in Mi Max 2 compared to its last year’s compatriot Mi Max. The devices has full metal unibody with black colour it feels like prime device in hand. Having thickness 7.6 mm and curved edges from all sides makes the device comfortable to hold. Antenna bands are infused on edges of back side in black colour making it less visible.
On the bottom of the phone you get USB type C and grills on the either side for speaker and microphone. On the left side you get sim card tray with dual sim hybrid capability. On the top in typical Xiaomi style you get 3.5 mm headphone jack, secondary microphone and IR blaster. On right side you get Power button and volume rocker. On front as obvious you get 6.44” Full HD IPS LCD screen. At bottom you find touch capacitive buttons which are backlit. Finger print sensor is on back and is pretty fast in unlocking the phone. We managed to reach the fingerprint reader on back with single hand but for people with smaller hands, it might be a two hand job.
Mi Max 2 has solid body, back panel is not a fingerprint magnet thanks to matte black finish. But one downside we feel for this phone is its weight. 211 gm is lot for a phone and might bother you at first but you’ll get used to it in a day’s use.
DISPLAY – 7.5/10
Mi Max 2 comes with 6.44 inch screen size, same as previous model. The screen resolution and pixel density also remains the same. The screen carries full HD display (1080 x 1980 pixels) resolution along with 342 ppi. The 2.5D glass is coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 which makes screen durable and scratch resistant. Mi Max 2 has same colour vibrancy and saturation as compared to Mi Max.
Phone includes ‘double tap screen to wake’ option, which might be useful to some user who do not like fingerprint sensor on the back. Display is decent enough to watch videos and play games. Colours are vibrant and rich in indoor use, but under sunlight it’s decent for this price range.
CAMERA – 8/10
Xiaomi has made special efforts this time in camera department. Primary (Back) camera comes with 12MP, f/2.2 aperture and duel LED (dual tone) flash. Company has provided camera of Xiaomi MI 6 in this phone (Sony sensor 1/2.9” sensor size, 1.25 µm pixel size) with 4k video recording support which may attract people who prefer best smartphone camera in budget price. Front camera is 5MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture and shoots pretty decent snaps. Camera performance is certainly a level up from previous Xiaomi phones in this price range.
BATTERY – 9.5/10
Battery is the best part of this phone, just like it’s last year variant. Phone comes with battery capacity of 5300 mAh which is considerably higher than 4850 mAh of Mi Max. You can complete the 2 days mark without charging the phone. Very unlikely but, if you think that battery life is not enough or running out of battery with sometime before you can find charging plug, phone comes with battery saver feature that gives extra hours by hibernating background sync.
To make it even better, the phone comes with Quick charge 3.0. Xiaomi claims the phones 5300 mAh can deliver up to 57 Hr. Call time, 18 Hr. video playback, 9 Hr. gameplay, and 21 Hr. of navigation.
This phone comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC under the hood. This 14nm chipset is known for its battery efficiency. Even though it isn’t quite powerful on pure performance as the snapdragon 652, it is definitely more power efficient. With Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB RAM to the team this device can handle some pretty heavy stuff and deliver smooth performance. Heavy games like NFS, Asphalt, Mortal Kombat, NOVA legacy were running smooth on this phone without any stutter or lag. Playing games and watching HD videos on this large display was eye pleasing experience.
Mi Max 2 comes with inbuilt space of 64 GB, out of which 55 GB is usable and rest is used by OS. Storage is expandable up to 128 GB but it will take a space of one sim if you want to use MicroSD card.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2 comes with MIUI 8 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. MIUI version 8 has made this UI better with lots of performance optimisations. The company has recently announced MIUI 9 and its launch date. MIUI 9 update is definitely going to be released to this device.
Sound output on the speaker in this device is one of the loudest we have heard on any smartphone. Sound quality is very rich with stereo speakers, depth of sound is very ear pleasing.
Mi max 2 is definitely a device that will charm the audience. I think it’s clear that this phablet is a monster on battery. This device is ideal for multimedia users who spend most of the time gaming, watching movies and YouTube etc.
Impressive performance thanks to Snapdragon processor and lots of RAM, decent display and camera with monster battery, this device is almost perfect in mid-range price section. At the price range of 16,999, if you are looking for a smartphone with great performance and battery with large display this device is for you.
